The first meeting of the Organising Committee of the International Municipal Forum was held in Moscow under the chairmanship of Alexei Overchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation. The Deputy Prime Minister of Russia has been tasked with leading the preparation and holding of the event, which in 2026 will be held as an annual federal forum for the first time.
The new status of the International Municipal Forum was formalised through the Executive Order of the President of the Russian Federation dated December 29, 2025. The forum will become the logical successor of the International Municipal BRICS Forum, held in autumn 2025 with the support of the Moscow Government and the All-Russian Association for the Development of Local Self-Government (the Foundation for International Business Communications (FIBC) acted as the operator of the IMBRICS Forum 2025).
The main objective of the forum is to create favourable conditions for the lives of citizens and to foster international cooperation between municipalities. The event will be held with the support of the Government of Russia, the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, and the Government of Moscow. The International Municipal Forum is anticipated to serve as a pivotal international platform for communication and business, facilitating the exchange of exemplary practices and fostering collaborative strategies for the sustainable advancement of regions, the assurance of population welfare, and the cultivation of agreeable urban settings within allied nations.
Over 4,000 people are expected to take part in the forum, including representatives of municipalities from various countries, business and academic circles, as well as heads of large commercial companies, investment funds, and banking structures. The programme includes a large-scale exhibition dedicated to the achievements of cities in such fields as urbanism, urban planning, and infrastructural development.
The International Municipal Forum will be held in autumn 2026 at the site of the National Centre "RUSSIA".
